September Newsletter
In 2012 we launched this ministry out of a coffee shop in my hometown of McMinnville, Oregon. As things open, we will be giving back to the town we love in the Arena Gathering, which was growing rapidly last year but we were compelled to shut it down due to COVID. Pray for wisdom, leaders, and a location as we launch what we believe will be the largest weekly gathering for men in the history of our county. -
4 Easy Ways to Initiate Spiritual Conversations in Everyday Life
Before I fell in love with Shanna she was one of my volunteers with Youth for Christ and Campus Life. I knew she was special before we even started dating when she passionately shared something I’ll never forget, “You’re either a missionary or mission field.”
Not only is she right but she lives by this code.

One Simple Habit to Make Your Mark An Exclamation Not A Question Mark
There are finishes and there are strong finishes. They are not the same. Sometimes a finish is a wrong finish. A divorce is a wrong finish. A suicide is a wrong finish. Getting fired from your job for reasons you could have avoided is a wrong finish. To live selfishly in retirement, refusing to impact others with your experiences, wisdom, and expertise is a wrong finish. It may be the most tragic finish of them all. -
LEADING SPIRITUALLY WHEN YOU HAVE NO CLUE
As a young man carrying eighty pounds out of the mountains, I struggled to maintain footing on the descent. Being an avid backpacker and getting sick of my constant slipping, my hunting partner Darby instructed, “Jimmy, nose over toes. Always keep your nose over your toes.” -
How To Reach Your Full Capacity As A Man
George Mallory was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to summit Mount Everest in the 1920’s. Mallory died in 1924 attempting to summit the highest mountain in the world.
Among other things, he’s remembered by a famous quote when was asked, “Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?”
He simply replied, “Because it’s there.”

Apathy: The Greatest Battle a Man Will Fight
My hunting partner Darby whispered these words of encouragement from behind
me in between breaths as we climbed the sheer mountain face with packs, weighted with my New Mexico mule deer. I’m not sure if his words were meant to encourage me or self-talk himself up the mountain—but it worked.
Similarly, I once asked my father-in-law how he marched for so many miles with such heavy pack loads during his Marine days, and his response was simply, “Slow and steady, slow and steady.”

WHY PROTECTING INTEGRITY IS IMPORTANT TO MASCULINITY
Men, be warned. If you lack integrity, you lack everything. You’ll never become the man God designed you to be. Pack your life with all the characteristics needed to be a whole man, complete and lacking nothing (James 1:4). Commit to being impeccable in your integrity. Climb through your life without excess baggage, having to resupply, or getting killed (or killing someone else for that matter) somewhere on the way!

Tell Them: What Great Fathers Tell Their Sons and Daughters
“I recently contacted QuickBooks support after hours. To get the help I needed, I entered a chat with a QuickBooks Support Professional. The entire chat lasted over 3 hours because I had to save new files, change older files, then reload the other files over it. While waiting for files to load, etc... we started talking and she asked what Men in the Arena was. I told her about the organization and that the Men in the Arena Podcast was listened to all over the world. She told me she has a boyfriend that wanted to get married, but she wasn't going to marry someone who wasn’t a Christian.
She started listening to an episode while helping me, since she was working remotely from her home in Costa Rica, and he was in the room. By the time we were off the chat, she had listened to two of the podcasts and noticed her boyfriend was listening too, and very much interested.
A couple months later she sent me a message letting me know that her boyfriend was a regular podcast listener, had given his life to Christ, and asked her to marry him. She said yes, of course!”

THE LIE OF TECHNOLOGY IN EFFECTIVE FATHERING -The Shocking Practices of Digital Founding Fathers and Why They Do Them
I’ve never considered myself a multi-tasker but often envied this quality in others—until now. In Digital Cocaine Huddleston wrote, “Neuroscience has learned that the human brain cannot multitask. Instead, we task switch, which is rapidly switching from one task to another, and when we do, our productivity decreases by as much as 40%.” -
REFLECTIONS OF FATHER’S DAY
My first celebration of the day was in 1994 shortly after the birth of my oldest son, James, and my most recent was yesterday. It was a good day. I am now reaping the rewards of parenting in the Stress Bubble when the boys were younger and still in the home. -
DAD WISDOM: PART II, Words of Wisdom for Fathers
As a follower of Jesus, pop culture and social norms fall victim to truth. They must. The non-conformist Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:25, “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”
And again in 1 Corinthians 2:4-6, “My message and my preaching were (a) demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away.”
Our guest Kenny Joyner shared #11-21 of his timeless Words of Wisdom for fathers...

PARENTING WISDOM: PART 1- 21 Words of Wisdom for Dads
Anonymous in the Bleachers, Not in the Game
In his book, Joyner asks readers a profound question, “Where are our fathers? Where the strong and courageous men that God and our society are looking for? Gone are the days of traditional families, which were led by strong and courageous men who placed an underlying loyalty on family values. Gone are the days when children would meet their fathers at the door after a hard day of work.”
